Panoramic view of Silver Lake with distant mountains and forested shores under a bright sky.

From 1926 to now; one hundred years of intrepid human spirit and thirst for adventure.

Humble beginnings breed deep roots.

Shyly tucked behind Silver Lake off Highway 88 on the other side of Carson Pass, Kit Carson Lodge is named for the same man; the trapper and scout Kit Carson. Christopher Houston Carson, nicknamed Kit, as an American frontiersman, fur trapper, wilderness guide, Indian agent and U.S. Army officer. He became an American frontier legend in his own lifetime through biographies and news articles that sensationalized his already incredible adventures that were magical combinations of fearlessness, survivalism, combat skills, and tenacity.

Our 13-acre lodge was built in 1926 by retired army officer Capt. A.O. Smith along the Emigrant Trail; the path of the American West wagon train and backyard of the Gold Rush of 1849.

Located up at 7,200 feet in elevation, the winters were harsh and the terrain brutal. Of the over 25,000 people who would travel across the western states in that year, they would average only ten miles a day, and 15 tops.

Some things never change.

In keeping with our history as a stop for many a weary traveler for one hundred years of exploration, expansion, and searching for new beginnings, we try to change as little as possible at Kit Carson Lodge.

We use a minimal wood finish on the knotty-pine walls so guests can see the aged patina that has withstood the tests of time. Our accommodations pay homage to mother nature, as our cabins are named after animals and fish like Cottontail and Rainbow and our rooms have tree names such as Hemlock and Juniper.

Even the furniture and amenities reflect the nostalgic style of decorating. Kerosene lanterns line the shelves of the elegant dining room next to a pot-belly stove. The cabin and room housewares and cabinetry look like pre-1960 furnishings. We welcome you to step back through history to a simpler time with a stay in Kit Carson.
